Two coin series that didn’t last long, the smallest coin made by the US and a mistake denomination. The two cents is an unusual denomination that first appeared in 1864, during a period of coin shortages caused by the Civil War and discontinued in 1873. The three cent first appeared in 1851 with three sub-types. The “trime” or “fish scale” was a small coin with a low grade silver content initially with three design changes from 1851 to 1873. In 1854 the silver content was raised to 90 percent. The three cent nickel was introduced in 1865 and discontinued in 1889. These were made primarily of copper with no silver content
