Description
The Bordentown Banking Company
The Bordentown bank was incorporated in 1851 and remained in business until at least 1904. This Uncut Pair of $10 Bordentown Banking Company notes were designed for use when the bank 1851 and 1854. They are printed by The American Banknote Company.
An Impressive Design
The Uncut Pair of $10 Bordentown Banking Co design incorporates a center vignette of the NJ State seal with an Indian couple to the left and a teacher and child to the right. Bottom left is a vignette of Richard Stockton. Stockton was a notable Navy veteran and United States Senator. A small locomotive engine puffs smoke center bottom. Carrying a pail is a milk maid on the right. The reverse has a large red design with Bordentown Banking Co through the center.
An error?
A portion of the design is visible above and encroaching on the top note. Was this put aside as an error?. And the bottom notes appear to be torn off or very uneven, not cut. Why? We’ll never know.
The Building Today
The building at 29 Farnsworth Avenue housed the Bank and was built in 1850. Although, eventually the bank stopped functioning and it was converted into a residence. Take note of the massive front doors and drop pendant cornice mouldings. Unquestionably, it has an appearance that conveys permanence.
