Description

1836 R&W Robinson Attleboro MA Hard Times Token

R & W Robinson were button manufacturers, so named after the earlier Robinson’s Jones & Co. (HT#152 & 153 with similar obverse) reorganized. New York was mentioned on the obverse because that was the location of the American Institute which awarded them the medal. The company was in Massachusetts.

The obverse of the token shows a seated woman holding a wreath surrounded by symbolic images: A spinning wheel, a ship, a shield, a liberty cap and pole, an heraldic eagle, a caduceus and wheat. Text above “American Institute” and below “New York” with an H below it.

Reverse text is curved; “Copy of medal awarded to R&W Robinson for the best military, naval, sporting and plain flat buttons 1836.”

Large token 28 millimeters, brown copper, VG condition.
