Introduction to the Capped Bust Half Dollar

The 1831 capped bust half dollar is a remarkable piece of numismatic history. Graded by CACG as VF30, this coin is a testament to fine craftsmanship and design. Toned nicely around the edges bluish greens with no problems. The capped bust fifty cent, 1807 – 1839, were held by, and traded between banks (as no silver dollars were struck for circulation between 1803 and 1840) so many survived with relatively light wear. Uncirculated or those without cleaning or some other problem are elusive. Edge lettered up until 1837 when a reeded edge was used.

Overton 103 variety. Albert Overton did extensive investigation of all the die marriages of the capped bust half dollar and published a book “Early Half Dollar Die Varieties”. This is the standard reference used for these coins.
