Nationals
These banknotes were issued by National Banks that were chartered by the federal government. From 1863 to 1935, National Banks were authorized to issue their own currency, which was backed by gold or silver reserves. National Bank Notes were standardized and featured a portrait of a prominent American, typically a president or founding father, and included a serial number and the bank’s charter number.
