15 states states enacted free banking laws between 1838 and 1860. 1838 –Â New York and Georgia, 1849 –Â Arkansas, 1850 –Â New Jersey, 1851 – Illinois, Maine and Ohio, 1852 –Â Indiana, Rhode Island, Tennessee and Wisconsin, 1853 –Â Florida, 1858 –Â Minnesota and Iowa, 1860 – Pennsylvania. Inflation, over printing and lack of backing, economic instability and the Civil War induced The federal government to step in with the National Bank Act of 1863, creating a centralized currency system and phasing out these locally issued notes. Many, but not all obsolete US currency listed here are from our home state, New Jersey, a state with a rich history, our main source of interest.
