Description
The 1836 R&W Robinson Hard Times Token HT-155 comes from a period in US history when political and financial strife was a crisis condition, 1833 to 1843. Merchants created private and usually satirical tokens in place of currency.
The obverse has a seated woman holding wreath surrounded by symbolic images
The reverse is all text – COPY OF A GOLD MEDAL / AWARDED TO / R & W ROBINSON, / FOR THE BEST, / MILITARY, NAVAL, / SPORTING, / & PLAIN FLAT / BUTTONS / 1836
R & W Robinson were button manufacturers in Massachucetts and the American Institute of New York had awarded them a medal.
