Description
Civil War era stor card designated F-255/393a, 1860’s Knickerbocker Store Card – Good For One Cent. During the US Civil War, there was a major coin shortage, businesses and states issued there own tokens to get by.
Struck by Bridgens of New York City whose name appears under the walking man obverse. The 255/393a refers to the die pairs used as many different combinations were used by private die sinkers on these 19th century tokens. The F stands for Fuld, the man who studied and wrote a huge volume on the different Civil War era tokens. I used to own a signed, hard cover 1st edition copy but it got lost in a move.
Non graded copper with no problems.
